Who is SpiTux?  A portmanteau: SpiTux = Spitak+Tux.  Tux is the Linux mascot.
Spitak is the town in Armenia where we're doing this project.  Nice to meet you!

Armenian Theme for TuxType

Armenian Typing Tutor Game

TuxType Armenian Theme makes TuxType into an Armenian Typing Tutor game. The goal of this project is to make an Armenian Theme for the game TuxType 2.0. The fully-functional Armenian Theme for TuxType 1.0 by the SpiTux Project, which is lots of fun, is available for download below.

TuxType, by tux4kids, is an educational typing tutorial game for children starring Tux, the Linux Penguin. It is graphical and requires SDL. It is free software copyrighted under the Gnu GPL.

TuxType Project lives on SourceForge, and is available in many languages: English, French, Danish, Finnish, American Sign Language, and now, Armenian!

Armenian Theme for TuxType 2.0

TuxType 2.0 differs from 1.0 fundamentally, one might say, in that it enables the use of True Type fonts. Localization for all the various languages now has to happen differently. Building an Armenian Theme for TuxType 2.0 is the purpose of this project.

The TuxType 2.0 Armenian Theme Project page is hosted on opensourcearmenia.com.

SpiTux Armenian Theme for TuxType 1.0

The TuxType 1.0 Armenian Theme was made by the SpiTux Project in February 2003.

There are two themes for TuxType 1.0, for the (Eastern) Armenian Phonetic and Armenian Typewriter Keyboards.

  • For a picture of the Armenian Phonetic Keyboard layout, click here.
  • For a picture of the Armenian Typewriter Keyboard layout, click here.

Download TuxType 1.0 and the Armenian Theme

To try out the TuxType Armenian Theme 1.0, first download TuxType for your OS, item 1 or 2, then download the Armenian Theme(s), item 3 or 4. The source code is, well, the source code. You don't need it to run the program.

  1. Download TuxType 1.0 for Windows
  2. Download TuxType 1.0 for Linux
  3. Download Armenian Phonetic Theme for TuxType 1.0
  4. Download Armenian Typewriter Theme for TuxType 1.0
  5. Download TuxType 1.0 Source Code
If you are in Armenia, try the TuxType Project page on opensourcearmenia.com.

Installing and Running Armenian Theme for TuxType 1.0

Run the TuxType installation. Then unzip the Armenian Theme(s) into the TuxType directory. Armenian Phonetic TuxType, for example, can then be run from a Command window with this command:

tuxtype --theme armenian_phonetic

For more convenience, on a Windows box, one can right-click on the TuxType icon on the desktop that appears after the installation, and add --theme armenian_phonetic into the Target field, making it look like so:

"C:\Program Files\TuxTyping\tuxtype.exe" --theme armenian_phonetic

These instructions are for Windows users. On your Linux system, install the RPM, copy the Armenian Theme zip file into the TuxType directory, unzip it right there, and fire away.

Thanks

As backgrounds, we've used our own wintery photos taken in and around Spitak, Armenia, and those of two friends. We'd like to thank a friend and a wonderful modern artist Nora Martirosyan for the photos of the surroundings of Aragatz, the tallest Armenian mountain. We also thank Karen Najaryan for the pictures of the Spitak mountain chains he's taken and made available to us.

To Do

A number of other keyboard layouts for Armenian are used by Armenians in the West--we're looking into incorporating those into making our theme work for those, too.
