School #5 in Spitak was founded in 1989, after
the earthquake. It was built by the Italian firm Pasotti. It
began to work on the 1st of September, 1989.
There were more than 280 pupils in the school then and the pupils came to school in two turns: morning and afternoon. Nearly the 90% of the pupils were orphaned children. |

The quantity of the pupils gradually lessened, as a boarding school was built near school #5 and after a year school #8 was built not far from the school. Besides, some of the families got new flats in the center of Spitak and moved. There are also families that went to live in other countries, mainly in Russia. |

The teaching staff was formed from the teachers
of other schools of the old town. They were all young women who became
widows after the earthquake.
From the very first day of school the headmaster is Larisa Tumanyan who had been working at school #3 as a teacher of English. Over the years, the teaching staff also changed. Some of the pupils moved to other schools and new young teachers came to work here. They are all excellent professionals. |

The quality of education at the school is very high. Out of the 78 graduates the school has had over the past 5 years, 23 were admitted at, and already graduated from various instituttions of higher education in Armenia. One of the graduates got a Gold Medal for excellent knowledge and in 2002 the school became known as the best school in town. |
